Improving co-authorship network structures by combining multiple data sources: evidence from Italian academic statisticians

    Get PDF
The aim of the present contribution is to merge bibliographic data for members of a bounded scientific community in order to derive a complete unified archive, with top-international and nationally oriented production, as a new basis to carry out network analysis on a unified co-authorship network. A two-step procedure is used to deal with the identification of duplicate records and the author name disambiguation. Specifically, for the second step we strongly drew inspiration from a well-established unsupervised disambiguation method proposed in the literature following a network-based approach and requiring a restricted set of record attributes. Evidences from Italian academic statisticians were provided by merging data from three bibliographic archives. Non-negligible differences were observed in network results in the comparison of disambiguated and not disambiguated data sets, especially in network measures at individual level

A Software System in Support of Quality of Degree Programmes

    Get PDF
We present a software system aimed at providing support to the management of processes for the self evaluation of the quality of degree programmes. The system was developed for quality management at the University of Salerno, Italy. Its main functionalities include: monitoring of the process status, scheduling of meetings, document management, support for working groups. With the help of some screenshots, the main features will be described in the context of scenarios that commonly arise in the management of processes of self-assessment of quality

TouchTap A gestural technique to edit text on multi-Touch capable mobile devices

    No full text
We present the design and evaluation of a gesture-based interaction technique for text editing on mobile devices equipped with touchscreens. The technique includes both taps and gestures to be drawn on the top of the soft keyboard to perform the basic editing actions: moving the cursor, selecting text, and using the clipboard. The technique is compatible with gesture writing and is suitable for bi-manual text entry. We carried out a user study including several practical tasks to evaluate it. Results showed a gain in performance for small font with respect to the technique currently available on most mobile devices with Android OS

CyBiS: A Novel Interface for Searching Scientific Documents

    No full text
Although textual interfaces for browsing scientific pa- pers have several drawbacks, they are still the most used in digital libraries. Several visual approaches have been proposed in recent years in order to provide the user with a deeper insight of the search context and to allow him/her to quickly gather a collection of documents judged as useful for his/her research. This paper presents CyBiS, a novel 3D analytical interface for a Bibliographic Visualization Tool with the objective of improving scientific paper search. The design choices are justified on the basis of previous experi- ences described in literature and its effectiveness is shown through the description of an example session

RankFrag: A machine learning-based technique for finding corners in hand-drawn digital curves

    No full text
We describe RankFrag: a technique which uses machine learning to detect corner points in hand-drawn digital curves. RankFrag classifies the stroke points by iteratively extracting them from a list of corner candidates. The points extracted in the last iterations are said to have a higher rank and are more likely to be corners. The technique has been tested on three different datasets described in the literature. We observed that, considering both accuracy and efficiency, RankFrag performs better than other state-of-art techniques
